The Ukrainian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Valery Vasyliev months
back, has attributed the increasing number of Nigerians willing to
study in Ukraine every year to the fact that education is relatively
cheaper in the country compared with other European countries. But the
story has changed. Now the Nigeria Ambassador to Ukraine, Frank Ngozi
Isoh, admonishes every parent not to send their children to Ukraine
Universities due to language barrier and other unexplained factors.
In September, the National Universities Commission (NUC) had said
some states sponsor students to sub-standard universities abroad and
Ukraine was one of the countries mentioned. The Executive Secretary of
NUC Professor Julius Okojie also made reference to a university in
Ukraine where there are over 800 medical students and some of the
students do not have the qualification in basic sciences.
According to Daily Trust, the Ambassador made some shocking
revelations that raises some doubts about the idea of studying in
Ukraine.
The Ambassador said that Nigerians wanting to study or already
studying in Ukraine won’t get best when it comes to studying in Ukraine
due to the English Language. “One thing I will like to say about
education in this place, and this is something we intend to package in a
report to government to see how this can be propagated back home – I do
not think that Nigerians get the best when it comes to studying in this
place in the English language.”
The cheap tuition fee has blind fold the parents from reasoning
objectively. In other part of Europe or America and Canada tuition could
cost up to $20,000 while it is about $3,000 in Ukraine. In addition,
the Ambassador said that the people who teach them in English language
are natives of Ukraine who are also not very proficient in the language.
He also encourages parents to allow their children to learn their
Ukraine language before enrolling them in these schools. While
commenting on universities offering medical courses said, “We don’t
think that Nigerian medical doctors trained in English speaking
universities here get the best. But those who endeavour to learn the
language and then attend lectures with the natives certainly get better
trained.”
We have not forgotten about the two Nigerian students studying in
Ukraine who were physically assaulted in front of their apartment by a
gang of Ukrainian racists, one of the young men identified as Olaolu
Sunkanmi Femi and his friend who is still unidentified were attacked by
the gang. Olasunkanmi has since been remanded in detention by the
Ukrainian police who refused to take the case to court citing
unavailability of the police to get an interpreter for him.
We hope Nigerians wanting to study in Ukraine will take a cue from
what the Ambassador has said. Please read between the lines. She is
really sending a note of warning to every parent who are sending their
children to Ukraine to study.language has a long way of bridging
communication gap.
